Thumm named new LPS K-12 principal

LAWRENCE – Brock Thumm has been selected as the new K-12 principal at Lawrence Public Schools, according to a press release from LPS Superintendent Ryan Williamson.
Williamson said of Thumm’s selection, “This decision reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring a strong, stable, and supportive learning environment for all students. As we make this transition, we want to assure you that our focus remains on what matters most – supporting students, families, and staff and providing a safe environment for learning.
“Mr. Thumm brings a deep passion for education and a proven track record of service-driven leadership. He is widely recognized as an excellent communicator, a skilled problem solver, and a builder of positive school culture. Just as importantly, he is looking forward to becoming deeply engaged in and connected to our local community.
“The guidance of the interview committee was reliant on the results of the community and staff survey regarding our K-12 vacancy and what qualities stakeholders value most in a school leader and identified the following: someone who communicates clearly, is accessible and supportive, builds strong relationships, and manages student behavior effectively. Mr. Thumm reflects all of these qualities and is well-prepared to lead our schools with heart, purpose, and professionalism.
“We are committed to open and clear communication as Mr. Thumm steps into this role, and we’re confident he will quickly become a familiar and trusted presence in the lives of our students and families.”
Williamson concluded, “We look forward to the leadership and care he will bring to our district, and to the continued success of our students under his guidance.”
Williamson said in a strategic shift aimed at strengthening school leadership without disrupting student and staff experiences, LPS adopted a K–12 principal model with a clear goal, “ensure that the internal restructuring of leadership has no adverse impact on day-to-day learning or staff support.”
To achieve a seamless transition, LPS prioritized clear and explicit communication with all stakeholders, students, staff, and families. Expectations around responsibilities and availability were clearly outlined, and comprehensive support and mentorship will be provided to Thumm to ensure his success.
Williamson said the key to the model’s success is the continuation of academic programming, support systems, curriculum, and instructional practices. Equally vital is the district’s ongoing commitment to student discipline and maintaining a safe, inclusive environment where both students and staff can thrive.
In preparation for this transition, LPS sought community and staff input through a K–12 Principal Input Survey. The feedback highlighted the critical qualities expected in the new leader: transparent communication, accessibility, student and staff support, consistent behavior management, strong relationship-building skills, and engagement in the community. These priorities guided the interview selection committee through the hiring process.
Williamson said Thumm’s qualifications align closely with the district’s identified needs. “Mr. Thumm brings a service-driven leadership style grounded in vision, mission, and shared beliefs. He is known for effective communication with staff, students, and parents, and for providing daily support through problem-solving and guidance. His active involvement in LPS events and activities, as well as his commitment to building a positive school culture and adhering to district policies, made him the clear choice for the role.
“Mr. Thumm has a strong background in educational leadership, with a particular focus on building a positive school culture and driving student-centered improvement. He believes in fostering a collaborative environment that empowers educators and supports students from all backgrounds. He describes his leadership style as one of absolute transparency, accountability, and equity – principles he brings to every aspect of his work.
“With experience implementing effective leadership practices and forming strong relationships with students, staff, parents, and community partners, Mr. Thumm is well-prepared for this new role. He has expressed enthusiasm about LPS’s commitment to innovation and equity, noting that these values closely align with his own. He looks forward to working with a dedicated team to ensure every student has access to a rigorous and supportive education.
“Mr. Thumm’s defining quality is his unwavering commitment to excellence. He is known as someone who goes the extra mile – and stays until the job is done right,” said Williamson.
