Voters turn down Harrison Schools bond request

By Genine Hopkins

On Tuesday, a special election was held in Clare County for both Gladwin Schools and Harrison Community Schools for bond proposals that in effect, would not increase the millage but maintain the millage amount for infrastructure. With 90% of the precincts reporting, both requests were voted down; in Harrison 54.01% voted against the proposal and in Gladwin, 63.35% voted against the proposal.
As indicated several weeks ago, the millage request would not raise current millage at 3.3 mills, but to maintain that amount at 3.3, for which an election is required. The money is marked for parking lot, sidewalk, and building upkeep.
When asked for a comment, Harrison Community Schools Superintendent Judy Walton expressed disappointment but remained hopeful for the midterm election in November of next year.
“Obviously, we are disappointed [the millage didn’t pass]. After analyzing feedback, I believe the Board will consider trying again in 2026, because the needs are not going away.”
