THREE RIVERS — A water main break in Three Rivers near the city’s water tower is expected to be fixed by the end of the week.

According to Three Rivers Department of Public Services Director Amy Roth, a water main near the base of the water tower on Erie Street broke Monday, which eventually led to Erie Street being partially blocked off because of the break.

The cause of the break is unknown at this time, but Roth said the main that broke was originally put in in 1963.

No pressure was lost in the water system due to the break, which Roth said was fortunate, and no boil water advisory has been issued. However, she added residents should expect to see some discoloration in their water due in part to the break.

“We will have discoloration in our water system while we’re running without our water tower, and just on pressure,” Roth said.

Roth said crews will excavate in the area beginning Wednesday to see what kind of break it is, which will determine how the break can be repaired. She expects the main to be repaired by the end of the week. However, because the water tower is being drained due to the break, Roth said it will take several more days to fully refill the tower.

“We have to put the tower back into service; right now, it’s empty, and that takes nine days from the time we start filling it to the time it’s fully disinfected,” Roth said.

Roth said no residents lost water service because of the main break. Those with concerns or further questions are asked to call the Department of Public Services at (269) 273-1845.
