The weather buoy, a Lake Michigan staple off South Haven’s coast for more than a decade, completed its journey from shore to deep waters on Friday.
The buoy is owned and maintained by LimnoTech of Ann Arbor in collaboration with the South Haven Steelheaders, City of South Haven, and VanBuren County. 100% of the funds for this station come from local contributions. This station was first deployed in 2014. It’s information is available to the public on a real time basis.
The buoy provides information on water and air temperature, wind speed and direction, and wave height and direction. A live video cam is provided courtesy of WOOD-TV.

A new feature this year, available only to researchers at this time, is a sensor that detects tagged fish. This information will help record migration patterns of planted fish on the lake.
