HOPKINS—It was a battle of state-ranked teams as No. 15 Allegan squared off with No. 4 South Christian in a Division 3 girls soccer district final on Friday, May 31.
And while the Tigers were able to come up with some scoring chances against a tough Sailors defensive unit, Allegan wasn’t quite able to convert and saw its season come to an end with a 3-0 loss.
The Tigers earned their spot in the title game by virtue of a 6-5 win over host Hopkins in a semifinal contest.
“Playing South Christian was tough for us coming off of an emotional win against Hopkins,” Allegan coach Paul Legge said. “It was also difficult getting ready for the game with graduation and the senior overnight trip yesterday. So, I was happy the girls still came out and competed.”
South Christian—which got two goals from Alexa Boersma and one from Meredith Helmus—led 2-0 at halftime. The Sailors added an insurance goal with 9:53 left in the second half.
Legge praised the play of Sam TerAvest in the losing cause.
“Sam was the foundation of our team this year,” he said. “She was the backbone of our defense all season.”
Allegan finished the season 13-4.
