SCHOOLCRAFT—After hosting the Tiger Invitational on Saturday, April 19, the Allegan girls tennis team returned to SAC/Lakeland action on Monday, April 21, with a road match in Schoolcraft.
And the Tigers came away with the 7-1 win, including a sweep of the doubles flights.
Allegan’s No. 1 doubles team of Taylor Fuller/Hanna Kievit won via forfeit. Other doubles wins came from No. 2 Madison Cook/Ireland Dewey (6-0, 6-1), No. 3 Sophia Augustine/Emma Scheffler (5-1, 6-3) and No. 4 Lilli Kelley/Shy Thompson (6-2, 6-3).
At singles, Allegan got wins from No. 1 Addy Fales (6-1, 6-1), No. 3 Kendall Halstead (6-0, 6-2) and No. 4 Serenity Puente (default).
At the Tiger Invitational, Allegan tied for fourth in the six-team field with eight points. Greenhills, ranked first in Division 4, won with 24 points, followed by Grand Rapids Christian (No. 6 in D3) with 16 points and Hudsonville with 14 points.
Allegan was playing without No. 1 singles Fales.
“We were short-handed, but we didn’t shy away from the competition,” Allegan coach Damien Arthur said.
No. 2 singles Judith Decurau and No. 1 doubles Fuller/Kievit had the best showings for Allegan, finishing second in their respective flights.
Two days earlier, Allegan hosted Jackson Lumen Christi and Hackett for the Allegan Tri and came away with a pair of wins.
The Tigers beat Lumen Christi 7-1 and best Hackett 6-2.
“This is some good D4 competition,” Arthur said. “Both Lumen Christi and Hackett qualified for the State Finals last year, and it was a blood bath of competition.”
Fales won both of her matches without dropping a set.
Also going 2-0 for the day for Allegan were: No. 3 singles Halstead; No. 1 doubles Fuller/Kievit; No. 2 doubles Dewey/Cook; No. 3 doubles Augustine/Sheffler and No. 4 doubles Kelley/Thompson.
Fales also had Allegan’s only singles win against Buchanan on Wednesday, April 16, also by a score of 6-0, 6-0.
The Tigers did take three of the four doubles flights to earn the 4-4 tie in this SAC/Lakeland matchup.
No. 1 doubles Fuller/Kievit (6-2, 6-2), No. 2 doubles Cook/Dewey (6-3, 2-6, 7-5) and No. 4 doubles Kelley/Thompson (6-3, 6-1) collected victories for Allegan.
