Clare football picks up fourth win

Clare (4-2) fired out to a 21-9 halftime lead and defeated Standish-Sterling 48-22 in Jack Pine Conference football action on Friday.
It was 7-3 after the first quarter and 42-15 after three periods in Clare’s favor.
Standish-Sterling kicked a 40-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. But Mason Heintz had a 15-yard run and Brayden Humphrey kicked the extra point for a 7-3 lead.
In the second quarter, Parker Smith caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Dane Alexander who later had a 1-yard run. Standish-Sterling had a 56-yard score run and it was 21-9 at halftime.
In the third. Alexander had touchdown runs of 29, 44 and 31 yards. Humphrey had one PAT and Abby Body kicked two.
This made it 42-9, Clare/ Standish Sterling later scored on a 71-yard run.
Donovan Hoogerhyde had a 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth for a 48-15 lead.
Standish Sterling had a 75-61 lead in total plays. Clare had a 485-315 advantage in total yards.
Alexander gained 70 yards on 10 pass completions and had one interception and one touchdown. He rushed 12 times for 176 yards. Heintz gained 113 yards on 15 carries. Hoogerhyde had 62 yards on five attempts.
Jacob Halicek caught three passes for 58 yards.
Gunner West had 13 total tackles for Clare.
The Pioneer broke a two-game losing streak with the win. and is 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the Jack Pine. Standish Sterling is 0-4 and 0-6.
Shepherd plays at Clare on Oct. 10. Shepherd has the same records as Clare as both are tied for third place in the Jack Pine. Ogemaw Heights is 4-0 for first place and Goodwin 3-1 for second in the Jack Pine.
