Clare soccer team picks up first win

CLARE — Clare’s boys soccer team enjoyed its first taste of victory this week.
“We played Ogemaw Heights tonight and finally won 1-0,” Clare coach Jim Bond said on Wednesday. “Kolton Pung scored our goal on a free kick with less than a minute left in the game. Tyler Thompson was in goal and had the clean sheet.”
Prior to the win, Clare had suffered six losses to open the season with defeats of 2-0 to Midland Calvary Baptist, 6-0 to Standish Sterling, 4-1 to Ovid Elsie, 2-0 to Ithaca, 3-0 to Pinconning and 6-0 to Hemlock. The loss to Pinconning was on Aug. 25 and to Hemlock on Aug. 27.
Clare was scheduled to play at home on Sept. 4 with Lakeview, and on Sept. 8 with Gladwin. There’s also road games at Shepherd on Sept. 10 and at Standish Sterling on Sept. 15. A home match is set for Sept. 17 with Ovid-Elsie.
Clare will then have three straight games on Sept. 22, 29 and Oct.1 against, respectively, Pinconning, Ogemaw Heights and Gladwin.
Clare is 1-3 in the Jack Pine Conference.
