Details amended for downtown social district

At its May 6 meeting, Sturgis city Commission amended details of the downtown social district, in connection with a new event that begins this month.
On April 10, a seasonal “Two-Wheel Tuesdays” was approved by commissioners. The gathering takes place at parking lots 9 and 11, located at North Nottawa and East West streets.
As part of that event, Sturges-Young Center for the Arts will provide alcoholic beverages for purchase at its lots. The lots are part of the social district, but to allow legal consumption and sale of adult beverages in that area, it must be included as a “common area,” officials said.
As with other sites used periodically for festivals, city staff recommended establishing a sub-area that may be activated as part of commission-approved events.
The first “Two-Wheel Tuesdays” event is May 21. It is scheduled for each Tuesday through September, with exception of “Sturgis Fest” week; and Aug. 6, due to the election.
