On the eve of Independence Day, drivers traveling along US-131 in Allegan County were forced to find an alternative route.
A stretch of US-131 near mile marker 50 near Plainwell was closed for approximately four hours on Sunday, July 3, as police dealt with a situation.
The closure began about 7 p.m. when deputies from the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office along with officers from the Otsego Police Department and Plainwell Department of Public Safety responded to a call for a subject on the highway. The highway remained closed as officers negotiated with the subject, described as a 37-year-old male.
Allegan County crisis negotiators spoke to the subject, who was eventually transported to a local hospital for treatment.
US-131 reopened shortly after 11p.m.
In addition to the Plainwell Department of Public Safety and the Otsego Police Department, representatives from the Gun Plain Fire Department, the Martin Fire Department, the Plainwell Area EMS and the Michigan Department of Transportation aided in the resolution of the incident.
