Dr. Tonya Bailey told those in attendance at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity Celebration that “change starts with us.”
The annual Diversity Celebration took place last Friday morning at the American 1 Event Center.
A sold-out center featured community and school leaders, business professionals, and students from area schools.
Bailey is an associate dean for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement at Oakland University.
Her professional background consists of more than 25 years in higher education. Prior to arriving at OUWB, she held various leadership roles including chief diversity officer at Lansing Community College, director of Student Success at Michigan State University, and director of college level and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programming at the University of Michigan.
She entertained those in attendance with song and words explaining the teachings of Martin Luther King Jr.
A video talking about the annual Challenge Day for students was shown at the Diversity Celebration.
Those in attendance were also able to put brush strokes on a canvas depicting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. provided by the Jackson School of the Arts.
The final product was auctioned off for more than $1,000 with half of the proceeds going to the Jackson School of the Arts and money for Challenge Day.
