For Mattawan golfers and coach Troy Pelak, the future looks very bright.
Key returners next year.
Griffin McClish – Pelak: “Was a freshman this year and had a tremendous season once he got comfortable playing with upper classmen. Griffin had an 18 hole scoring average of 83.9 and a 9 hole scoring average of 40.3. He came on strong in the last few weeks of the season carding a 74 at Cedar Chase, a 76 at Bedford Valley, then a 79 at Regionals. He will be an important part of Mattawan’s success next year and over the next three years.
Luke Roberts – Pelak: “Was also a freshman this year and appeared to gain confidence in the middle of the season. Luke had an 18 hole scoring average of 85.9 and a nine-hole average of 43.3. He had a strong stretch in the middle of the season where he scored an 80 at the Tom Collins, an 80 at the SMAC tournament, then a 79 at the Bedford Valley Open. He also will be a part of a strong future foundation for the Mattawan Golf
team.
Boston Bilek – Pelak: “A junior who had an 18 hole scoring average of 85.2 and a 9 hole average of 42.3. Boston had a strong two week stretch late in the season where he shot 81 at Cedar Chase, 81 at Bedford Valley, then 82 in a playoff at Lincoln GC to land him a spot to play in Regionals. We will look forward to his senior leadership next year.
Bryson Ku – Pelak: “Was also a junior who had an 18 hole scoring average of 88.5 and a 9 hole average of 44.7. Bryson’s consistency and poise on the course will be valuable as a senior next year to help get Mattawan back to the state finals as a team.
Leo Filipine – Pelak: “Was a freshman this year who played part time on varsity and on JV. Leo held an 18 hole scoring average of 86.0 and a 9 hole scoring average of 45.1. He was able to step right into some varsity matches and held his own. He will certainly be an important part of the future successes of Mattawan’s golf team.
With three returning freshman withvarsity experience, and four more freshman/sophomores on JV trying to fight for a varsity spot next year, the competition looks fierce and I would expect a very strong team to surface next
year,” Pelak said.
