Obituary: Michael H. McAuliffe

Michael H. McAuliffe, 82, passed into Heaven on Aug. 22, 2024. He was born on Oct. 27, 1941 to Edward and Flossie (McGavit) in Albion, Michigan.

His parents, brother, Pat (Donna) Mulkey and sister, Betty (Al) Williamson preceded him in death.

Mike graduated from Albion High School in 1959 and was employed at Parks Drugs while he got a degree in Accounting from Jackson Junior College. He joined the National Guard in 1964 and spent seven months at Ft. Knox.

He and Barbara S. Burkwalt were joined in marriage in 1964 and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They have two children, Christopher (Barbara J.) McAuliffe and Mary McAuliffe. He has five grands and seven great-grands.

Mike worked at Albion Malleable Iron for 34 years. After retiring, he became a longtime custodian at St. John Church/School. He was an active member of St. John Church and Knights of Columbus Council #5255. He held many offices in the K of C’s including State Youth Director. He was the financial secretary for over 30 years.

Mike was a born coach, touching the lives of hundreds of young people. He led young men’s’ fast pitch team, Dusty’s of Rice Creek, to three trips to Nationals. He also coached several women’s teams, as well as, 10 years with Springport High School girl’s fast pitch softball. At St. John Catholic School, he coached girls’ basketball for over 25 years, as well as, volleyball and softball. He loved it when he coached children of mothers that he had coached.

During the summer, Mike led Vacation Bible School. He loved planning the Annual Halloween Carnival and many other activities.

After retirement, he and Barb realized a lifelong dream and opened an Ice Cream Parlour in Marshall where they made new friends and memories.

A Rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024, followed by a visitation from 7-8 p.m. at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Dr. Albion, MI 49224.

On Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, there will be a Mass at St. John Catholic Church in Albion, Michigan at 11 a.m. 1020 Irwin Ave. in Albion.

Burial will take place at a later date.
