SCHOOLCRAFT — U.S. 131 will be shut down at the railroad tracks in Schoolcraft for the next two weeks for major railroad crossing work.

The Michigan Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that from beginning Monday, July 15, both northbound and southbound U.S. 131 will be shut down as part of a rebuild of the crossing south of Schoolcraft. The road will be back open to traffic on Monday, July 29.

Southbound traffic will be detoured via U Avenue, Eighth Street and XY Avenue during this time period, while northbound traffic will be detoured via XY Avenue, Portage Road and U Avenue. After the crossing work is done, southbound traffic will re-open, while the northbound detour will remain in place.

The work is part of the two-year, $51 million project to rebuild and repave the 13.4 miles of the highway from the Rocky River in Three Rivers to Shaver Road in Schoolcraft. The majority of the funding was made possible by the state’s Rebuilding Michigan program.
