Arbor Day in South Haven was celebrated by the traditional planting of a tree in a city park on Friday, April 24. South Haven Rotarians joined kindergarteners from Lincoln School in planting a red oak in Stanley Johnston Park which is known for its stately oak trees. It marked the eighth year of a partnership between the city, school system and Rotarians celebrating the community’s designation as a Tree City USA.
For the Rotarians, it also commemorated Rotary International founder Paul Harris who traveled worldwide in the 1920s and 1930s planting “Friendship Trees”. Parks Superintendent Aaron Priebe provided an outdoor lesson on trees which included a ride in a bucket truck to the top of the stately Johnston oaks.
