SAUGATUCK—Neave Rewa and Jen Schock formed quite the dynamic duo for the Saugatuck girls soccer team in its SAC showdown with visiting Watervliet on Monday, April 22.
Schock scored two goals, while Rewa scored one and assisted on another to lead the Trailblazers to the 4-2 victory, running Saugatuck’s unbeaten streak to five in the process.
CeCe Atkins scored the other Saugatuck goal. Alina Martinson contributed two assists and Kennedy Gustafson chipped in with one.
“Overall, it was a solid and steady game for us,” first-year Saugatuck coach Jim Theis said. “We limited the opposition to a few chances. We also countered very well and were able to control the field.”
Theis was particularly pleased with the effort given the fact that the team had to undergo some lineup changes due to an injury.
“One of our speedier wings, Mallory Hass, suffered an injury last week so we had to change a few things around to compensate,” Theis said. “Sophomore Avery Smith was particularly strong in both center and wing midfielder positions for us.”
In addition to her assist on the offensive end, Gustafson played 60 minutes in goal. She made five saves in the shutout.
Virginia Cernugel played the other 20 minutes in goal, coming up with one save.
Three days earlier, Saugatuck built a 4-1 halftime lead en route to securing the 5-3 victory over visiting Delton.
Rewa and Schock each scored twice, with each also collecting one assist. CeCe Atkins scored once, while Smith added an assist.
Cernugel was in goal for the entire game, making three saves.
