First through fifth grade students at Trinity Lutheran School, Paw Paw, shared a special evening on May 11, in honor of our nation’s 250th birthday celebration.
Under the guidance of teacher, Kelly Docsa, first and second grade students displayed individual dioramas and posters which focused on the American Community. Each student explained the particular composition of the community (church, school, village, rural, urban) they chose to study.
Third through fifth grade students presented “A Night of Notables,” the 30th anniversary of this special school program. According to Deanna Hindenach, her Michigan History third grade students chose and researched notable people from Michigan’s past. After completing research, writing an account as an autobiography and dressing in period costume, each student delivered a speech about the life and accomplishments of the following famous Michiganians: Lewis Cass (Lucas Meyer), Louis Chevrolet (Chase Lawson), Laura Haviland (Sophia Flory), Ethel Ryba (Amy Fielhauer), Mike Ilitch (Braylen Dalian),and Dr. Jan Pol (Jack Tripp).
Fourth and fifth grade students chose notables from the Colonial/Civil War era of American History. Their teacher, Andrea Barbre, introduced each student who was dressed in period costume and delivered a speech about his or her life and each person’s contributions to our country. Famous notables were: Benjamin Franklin (Jacob Barbre), George Washington (Eli Fuchs), Sacajawea (Sophie Burleson), Abraham Lincoln (Lucas Barbre), Sojourner Truth (Addisyn Smith), and Elizabeth Cady Stanton (Olivia Bogda).
The evening ended with many accolades and an ice cream social in the parish hall.
