Watson Twp incident illustrates dangers deputies face

ALLEGAN – Allegan County Board of Commissioner chairman Jim Storey points out the challenges and risks encountered by local law enforcement officials no matter where they are serving.
“While the dangers faced by Allegan sheriff’s deputies in performing their duties may be assumed to be associated with weapons, it’s clear there can be other, more common sources of potential harm as well,” Storey said in his recent weekly newsletter. “On a recent Saturday morning in Watson Township, a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic infraction. Instead of stopping to engage the officer, the vehicle’s driver accelerated and rammed the deputy’s cruiser.
“The resulting damage disabled the cruiser and the driver attempted to flee. Thankfully the deputy was uninjured, and the driver was later apprehended by assisting law enforcement agencies. However, the incident underscores the hazards that can arrive unannounced for those charged with protecting and serving our county’s residents.”
No further information was available on the matter.
