A website about the annual 5K Freedom Run/Walk says, “Gear up for an electrifying experience at the 13th Annual Freedom 5K Run/Walk, where each stride celebrates the valiant heart of Spc. Robert Friese and the selfless sacrifice of many others. This isn’t just a run; it’s a tribute, a timed challenge over 3.1 miles that ignites the spirit of remembrance and gratitude. Join us on the last Saturday of April, a poignant time that resonates with the memory of Spc. Friese, and run shoulder to shoulder with fellow patriots. Let every step you take resonate with purpose, and know that your participation also serves a greater mission, with proceeds bolstering the Veterans Freedom Park. It’s more than a race; it’s a heartfelt homage and a journey—let’s make every mile count!”
There’s still time up to participate in Harrison’s 13th annual 5K Freedom Run/Walk in memory of Robert Friese and all others who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Registration ends April 27, 2024 at 8:00am EDT
Friese went to Iraq in January, 2011 as part of Operation New Dawn. He died there just 13 years ago, on April 29, 2011. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and promoted to Specialist.
The 5K event in his honor, and in honor of all fallen veterans, takes place Saturday, April 27th beginning at 10 a.m. and the walk at 12:00 pm with registration across from the County Building at the Veterans Freedom Park for Clare County beginning at 8:30 a.m. Cost to participate is $35.
The three-mile run or walk always coincides with the date of Friese’s “ultimate sacrifice to this great nation,” said Veteran’s Affairs Director Karl Hauser. “We encourage the community to come out and support this great cause,” he added.
Funds raised by the event will be used for the Veterans’ Freedom Park. A post on their website said, “We rely solely on donations, and the two events we host each year to keep the park opened and maintained. Hope you will join us in honoring all veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice, at this important event.”
Since the beginning of this event, it has been an officially timed 3.1 mile run /walk. This race has been held the last Saturday of every April, as this coincides with the anniversary date of Spc. Friese.
