CLARE — It was a fun sophomore golf season at Clare for Kolten Pung.
He shot an 88 in the regional tournament for Clare.
It was his first year on the varsity.
“I think I made the transition (from varsity) very well,” Pung said. “Last year was pretty much shooting around the 120s but his year it’s been in the lows 80s and averaging 90s so I feel I’m doing very well.”
Pung said the improvement came from “getting out on the course and actually playing. I played pretty much almost every day.”
His best round during the season was an 83.
“My irons were so good,” he said, adding irons have basically been the best part of his game.
But to get better, “I’ve been focusing on getting off my tee shots,” Pung said, “with either my driver or my hybrid and longer iron.”
Pung plays a lot of golf during the offseason and also plays soccer and basketball. Soccer is his best sport.
His soccer team at Clare this fall “is looking good, we’re only losing a few seniors,” he said. “We’re working in the offseason really hard.”
He plays center mid and said his strengths are “passing and shooting the ball and getting some goals”
