South Haven harbor dredging underway

By Tom Renner

Dredging is underway on Lake Michigan in the South Haven Harbor by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It is taking place at the harbor entrance, between breakwater heads, and upstream to North Shore Drive. The dredged material is being transported through submerged pipeline and discharged for beach replenishment. The work is predicted to last the month of June. The Corps of Engineers in a press release said samples of the dredged material are taken to confirm it’s suitable for beach replenishment. The submerged pipeline is marked with orange buoys every 500 feet and a bright yellow, lit pontoon at each end. Boaters are asked to use caution near the dredging equipment.
