South Haven house destroyed by fire, six occupants evacuated, one hospitalized

Several fire departments responded to a dwelling fire in the City of South Haven last week.
South Haven Area Emergency Services (SHAES) was dispatched to a structure fire at 849 Phillips Street. Firefighters arrived to a house fully engulfed in flames.
Mutual aid was requested from the Bangor Community and Covert Township fire departments A second alarm brought Hartford and Watervliet fire departments to the scene.
Neighbors reported hearing a series of explosions. The six occupants evacuated. The explosion sounds caused nearby schools to be put on a lockdown for a short period of time.
One elderly resident was reported to be using oxygen. He was later brought to the hospital for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation.
Michigan Gas Utilities was needed to turn off the gas supply to the residence. The Red Cross arrived to assist the displaced residents. South Haven Public Works and South Haven Police Department assisted at the scene.
