Paw Paw baseball team Improves record to 18-11-1

PAW PAW – The Paw Paw varsity baseball traveled to Niles on Wednesday, May 15, for a conference twinbill and suffered two losses.
In the opener against Niles, the Red Wolves scored in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. Unfortunately, the Vikings scored 2 unearned runs in the last inning for a walk off win 3-2. Dylan Abet pitched four outstanding innings, allowed one ER, and struck out six. Bryn Carlson pitched 2+ strong innings, allowed 0 ER, and struck out two. Caden Bowen and Landon Buhl collected the lone hits. Caden Bowen went 1-3 with an RBI double. Landon went 1-2 with an RBI single and BB.
In game No. 2 Niles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but after 5 innings the score was tied 2-2. The Vikings scored 5 late runs to win 7-2. Jake Hindenach was tough for five innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out seven. Leading the offense was Ryan Holmes, Jacob Major and Caden Bown. Holmes went 1-3 with a BB. Major was 1-3 with a HBP. Caden Bowen was 1-2 with a walk. Gunnar and Drew each added an RBI.

Varsity baseball traveled to Kalamazoo college Friday for a nonconference DH against Centreville. The first game was a pitchers duel to start with the Bulldogs up 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth. The Red Wolves bats exploded for six runs and then cruised to a 6-3 victory.
“Maverick threw an outstanding 7 inning complete game, 3 ER, and struck out four,” coach Derek Vanderburg said. “Maverick is now 4-0 on the mound.”
Leading the offense was Holmes by going 4-4 with a SB. Goodell went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Maverick Johnson was 1-for-2 with 2 RBIs. Landon Buhl went 1-3 with an RBI single. Hindenach added an RBI single. Bryn Carlson and Jacob Major added singles. In game 2 the bats woke up and cruised to a 15-0 mercy victory in 3 innings.
“Gunnar pitched a marvelous game going all 3 innings, allowed 1 hit, and struck out 6. Jake and Jacob led the offensive attack,” Vanderburg said.
Hindenac went 2-2 with two triples and four RBIs. Hindenach’s 2 triples broke the career triple record. He now has 11 career triples. Jacob Majorwas 2-2 with an RBI. Buhl was 1-1 with 2 walks and 2 RBIs. Caden went 1-1 with 2 RBIs and a BB. Gunnar Goodell and Dylan Abnet each added a single and an RBI. Maverick Johnson hit a deep double and walked. Holmes added a single and a walk, while Nate Lamere chipped in with an RBI.
The Red Wolves record now stands at 18-11-1.
